Sulayman Al-Bassam

Born in Kuwait in 1972, graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1994. Sulayman founded Zaoum Theatre in London in 1996, of which Sulayman Al-Bassam Theatre is the Arabic arm, established in Kuwait in 2002.
His work has been published in various languages and study of his work forms part of higher education curricula at universities in the USA and the Middle East. He produces work in both English and Arabic languages; productions include:
- The Al-Hamlet Summit (The National Arts Award Kuwait 2003, Edinburgh Fringe First Award 2002)
- Best Production and Best Director - Cairo International Festival of Experimental Theatre 2002
- Trading (Best Production and Best Design - Gulf Youth Theatre Festival Awards)
- Melting The Ice (15th Cairo International Festival for Contemporary Theatre)
- The Arab League Hamlet (Les Journées Théâtrales de Cartage)
- Hamlet in Kuwait
- The 60 Watt Macbeth and The Game Show (National Theatre of Dijon).
Future work includes The Baghdad Richard, a radical re-writing of Richard III, commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company for The Complete Works Festival 2006-2007.
Sulayman lives and works in Kuwait where he has recently co-founded The Culture Project, a private arts development agency aimed at developing the infrastructure and quality of live arts in Kuwait and the Gulf region.
